From Hospital to Holistic: Creating a Successful Integrative and Functional Medicine Practicee

From Business Structure to IV Room Setup—A Functional Medicine Approach with Vitamin C and Ozone

Abstract

Transitioning from a hospital- or insurance-based model into an independent integrative or functional medicine practice presents both significant opportunities and complex challenges. Success requires more than clinical expertise—it demands mastery of practice design, business strategy, and operational execution. In this session, Dr. Carlone—a physician with over 25 years of experience as both a hospital-based emergency physician and the founder of a thriving integrative practice—will provide a comprehensive roadmap for clinicians seeking to establish or expand integrative, functional, regenerative, or concierge practices. Participants will gain practical guidance on corporate structuring, liability protection, HIPAA implementation, electronic health records, staffing, and the financial realities of transitioning from insurance-based to self-pay care. Common questions faced by new providers will be addressed, including how to price services, where to source supplies for IV therapy, ozone, and other therapeutics, and how to identify trusted vendors to support sustainable growth.

Beyond infrastructure, the session emphasizes the therapeutic integration of Vitamin C Therapy (VCT) and ozone as cornerstone modalities. Attendees will learn when and how to implement VCT—not only through oral sodium ascorbate and high-dose intravenous Vitamin C (HDIVC), but also through underrecognized applications that significantly enhance outcomes and augment other therapies. Practical insights will be provided on establishing both VCT and ozone programs, including sourcing supplies, evaluating vendors, equipment requirements, and identifying trusted training pathways. Equally critical, participants will discover where to obtain proper certification in both VCT and ozone, ensuring safe, effective, and evidence-based implementation. By combining high-level science with operational expertise, this session equips providers to design sustainable, patient-centered practices that meaningfully improve outcomes and quality of life.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify essential business and operational strategies for establishing an integrative practice, including corporate structuring, HIPAA compliance, liability protection, and sustainable self-pay financial models.
  2. Evaluate practical requirements for practice setup, including sourcing supplies for IV therapy, ozone, and injectables; selecting vendors; pricing services; and avoiding common pitfalls in the transition from insurance-based care.
  3. Examine the spectrum of Vitamin C Therapy (VCT) beyond oral and IV administration, exploring advanced clinical applications, patient populations most likely to benefit, and the certification pathways required for safe and effective practice integration.
