Thyroid Health & the Vitamin C Connection: Redox Balance, Autoimmunity & Endocrine Optimization
Exploring the critical role of ascorbate in thyroid hormone synthesis, inflammation control, and endocrine resilience.
Abstract
The thyroid gland plays a central role in metabolic regulation, hormonal balance, and cellular energy production. While traditionally recognized for its immune and collagen-supportive functions, Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) has emerged as a key modulator in thyroid physiology and redox homeostasis. This presentation reviews the scientific evidence linking Vitamin C to thyroid hormone synthesis, oxidative stress reduction in thyroid tissues, and modulation of autoimmune processes.
Special focus is placed on Vitamin C’s impact on adrenal-thyroid axis integrity, levothyroxine absorption, and the mitigation of environmental goitrogens. Data from clinical studies suggest that deficiencies in Vitamin C may exacerbate inflammation and oxidative damage in conditions such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, hypothyroidism, and Graves’ disease. Attendees will gain clinical insights into evaluating ascorbate status and implementing targeted antioxidant support in thyroid dysfunction.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:
- Describe the mechanisms by which Vitamin C supports thyroid hormone synthesis, redox balance, and autoimmune modulation.
- Interpret current clinical data linking ascorbate deficiency to thyroid disorders including hypothyroidism and autoimmune thyroiditis.
- Integrate evidence-based strategies to assess and optimize Vitamin C status as part of a comprehensive thyroid care protocol.
