Lecture Title:

The Health Benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen as a Pro-oxidant and Antioxidant Therapy.

Learning Objectives

In this lecture we will discuss the role of REDOX in the healing and regenerative process.
1.: The student will learn the health benefits of oxidation and why using pro-oxidative therapies improves the healing response
2.: The student will gain knowledge of hyperbaric oxygen therapy and how it uniquely improves cellular oxygenation
3.: The student will learn that HBOT has both pro and anti oxidant roles and we can use both of these to improve healing and recovery from many chronic illnesses

Presentation Abstract

Over the past 20+ years oxidation has been blamed for causing most cellular aging and chronic illness. As a result, much of the science and research has focused on antioxidants’ role in eliminating cellular oxidation. While it is true that OVER oxidation has many cellular consequences, it is also a potent cell signaling molecule required for cellular adaptation, stem cell mobilization, SOD and glutathione up regulation and inflammation control. It is important, especially when dealing with chronically ill patients, that we know how to keep these REDOX molecules in balance and know how and when to push each side of the equation. This lecture will discuss some of these key concepts as well as describe the role hyperbaric oxygen plays in the process.
